Angeliqua Rivera has quietly shaken Nairobi’s bartending scene. Known as the “Rockstar Bartender,” this Filipino mixologist has transformed what many considered an impossible dream into reality, Kenya’s first all-female bartended bar.
Angeliqua’s story begins far from Kenya’s capital. With a bachelor’s degree in nursing and a passion for music, she initially performed as a singer in venues across Manila, Qatar, Dubai, and Egypt. It was during these performances that she discovered her fascination with the art of bartending. “People love to drink and have fun,” she reflects, “and I realized nursing wasn’t for me.”
Her journey to Nairobi started with a simple invitation – a two-day trip that would change her life forever. Enchanted by the weather and recognizing the untapped potential for female bartenders in the region, Angeliqua made a bold decision to stay. Since 2016, she has been crafting cocktails and mentoring women in an industry traditionally dominated by men.
Angeliqua’s expertise shines brightest when discussing her craft. “Singleton is known as the bartender-friendly whisky,” she explains with enthusiasm. “It’s so versatile – strong, fruit-forward, and gentle on the palate.” Her philosophy is simple yet profound: follow the “rule of three” – whisky, a mixer, and your chosen flavor notes. “Any fruit, I guarantee, with soda water or sparkling water and Singleton – you will never go wrong.”
This philosophy culminated in her championship-winning creation, “The Twelvefold Toast,” inspired by Kenyan hospitality rituals. Built on Singleton 12-Year-Old as its foundation, the cocktail features Lavender Cryo Blanche, Perrier Sparkling Water, and an elegant gold pear garnish. The drink embodies Angeliqua’s approach to mixology – gentle yet complex, inviting yet sophisticated.
Through three World Class Bartender Competition appearances, Angeliqua has proven that excellence knows no gender. Her Westgate establishment, staffed entirely by female bartenders, serves everyone while challenging industry norms. “I don’t want to genderize the bar,” she states firmly. “You wouldn’t know if it’s a man or woman who created the drink, you’ll just enjoy it, right?”
