The global travel industry in 2025 is witnessing an unparalleled boom, with visa applications for countries worldwide hitting all-time highs. A joint report by the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) and VFS Global forecasts that Africa’s Travel & Tourism sector could contribute US$168 billion to the continent’s economy and generate over 18 million jobs. This potential hinges on critical advancements in air infrastructure, streamlined visa processes, and robust tourism marketing to attract global visitors.
The skyrocketing demand for visa appointments has created opportunities for scammers to exploit unsuspecting applicants. Fraudsters, often posing as VFS Global staff or third-party agents, target visa applicants and jobseekers, offering expedited appointment slots for illicit fees, preying on those eager for travel documentation.
Mr. Stephen Kubasu, General Manager-Operations at VFS Global, emphasized caution. “Visa appointment slots are allocated online based on demand forecasts and Consulate capacity,” he said. “Applicants must arrive at our Visa Application Centres 15 minutes early to secure their slot. We urge travellers to beware of touts promising early bookings for payment. Many scammers create fake profiles on social media or search platforms, misusing our logos and branding to deceive applicants. These fraudulent listings often include misleading contact details, tricking travellers into believing they are legitimate VFS Global channels.”
To combat these scams, VFS Global has introduced stringent safeguards. Entry to Visa Application Centres is restricted to those with confirmed appointments, enhancing security. A new system links visa application form reference numbers to booking references for authenticity verification. An OTP (One-Time Password) is now required for booking appointments, curbing unauthorized agent interference. VFS Global has also launched a comprehensive anti-fraud campaign, embedding warnings in social media, appointment letters, call centre messages, and physical signage. Applicants encountering suspicious activities are urged to report details to acco@vfsglobal.com for swift action.
The surge in outbound travel has extended visa processing times, prompting VFS Global to enhance its operations. The company has extended centre operating hours, allocated dedicated slots for passport submission and collection, and expanded waiting areas to improve applicant comfort. These measures aim to reduce delays and streamline the application process.
