Playing on home soil, the Taifa Stars capitalised on their familiarity and crowd support, with goals from midfield dynamo Stephano Mbonde and forward Habibu Kondo setting the tone.
On Wednesday (6th August), Tanzania faced a tricky second match against Mauritania, who were held goalless in their opener against the Central African Republic. The tense Group B clash remained goalless until the 89th minute, thanks to a late strike from veteran defender Shomari Kapombe, who latched onto a clever through ball from Iddy Nado and slotted past Abderrahmane Sarr to spark wild celebrations from the home fans.
The victory is Tanzania’s second in as many matches, taking them to six points and the top of Group B, ensuring the home side are on course for the knockout stages.
